A call to love: Treat Everyone as if it’s Their Last Day on Earth

A reminder to show love to everyone you meet, because it just might be their last day on earth. A call to love - treat everyone as if it's their last day on earth

Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight.  Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do so with no thought of any reward.  Your life will never be the same again.

—Og Mandino

I’ve heard people say that we should live each day as if it’s our last day on earth.

I guess the idea is that then we’d spend our final day doing everything we’ve always wished we could do.  (Which, for me, would involve eating enormous amounts of pasta and chocolate cake.)

But, instead, what if we lived our lives as though it was everyone else’s last day on earth?

That creates an entirely different frame of mind, doesn’t it?  It takes the focus off of ourselves and places it on those around us.

What would that look like?  Well, maybe we’d finally show our family members the kindness and understanding we often withhold.  We’d overlook the little quirks and habits that sometimes drive us nuts.

We’d tell them how much they mean to us.  We’d laugh at their silly jokes.  We’d really look at them and hang onto every word they said.

What a difference this simple shift in perspective could make in our relationships!

Yes, we need to show our loved ones how much we love and appreciate them–and we need to do it now, while we still have the gift of time. {Believe me, you’ll do anything to get that chance back once they’re gone!}

But what about people outside of our circle of family and friends?

We know we’re supposed to love our neighbors, but what does that look like?  How do we go about loving the stranger, the prickly coworker, the person whose religious beliefs are so different from our own?

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  John 13:34-35 NIV

Today is September 11, a day that brings up a lot of feelings for all of us.  I can’t think of a better day to make a commitment to love people as never before.

Why not try this unique approach, just for today?  Every time you interact with someone, do your best to treat them as if it’s their last day on earth.  Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster.

Your life will never be the same again.

    Great post! Working in the retail industry I’m constantly dealing with customers and some of them can just get under my skin and they’re indecisive and I can get so frustrated. This is a great reminder for me to treat everyone with patience and kindness. Thanks for sharing 🙂

      I know, it’s not always easy to treat others this way, but I’m working on it! Thanks for the comment!
