Magical French Muesli Recipe

One of my all-time favorite morning meals, this magical French Muesli recipe is everything you could want in a breakfast: it’s tasty, healthy, filled with fresh fruit and nuts, and ready to grab and go when you have a busy morning ahead of you.

Similar to overnight oats, but made with creamy, protein-rich yogurt instead of water or milk, muesli originates from the Swiss (the word muesli means “mush” in German).

So why am I calling this French muesli?  Well, I’ve had this muesli recipe written down on a scrap of paper and tucked away in my recipe folder for years.

And, although I’ve tweaked it a bit, I’m pretty sure it originated from the book, French Women Don’t Get Fat, by Mireille Guiliano.

Even if it didn’t come from that book, I’d like to think it did, because every time I eat this healthy breakfast, I feel like I’m sharing a little secret with all those svelte French women.

Not only is this wonderful make-ahead muesli recipe quick and simple to make, it’s adaptable, so you can easily substitute different ingredients and toppings according to what you like or have on hand.

This magical muesli is the best kind of breakfast.  Not only is it delicious, healthy, and satisfying — it’s French! (or at least I like to think so).  I hope you love it as much as I do!

Base Ingredients

1 cup rolled oats (use gluten-free oats if you’re strictly gluten free)
1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins
2 Tablespoons dried cherries or other dried fruit (optional)
1½ cups plain unsweetened yogurt (regular or Greek, cow or goat)
2 Tablespoons honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar
dash of sea salt

Toppings

1 apple or pear, shredded or chopped
Nuts and seeds (I like to add a mix of raw walnuts, sliced almonds, and raw pumpkin seeds)

Additional Topping Ideas

Shredded coconut
Berries
Nut butter
Ground flax seed
Additional honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar
Additional yogurt
Milk of choice

Directions

  1. In a medium glass bowl or glass food storage dish, combine all base ingredients well.  Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 15 minutes, or preferably overnight.
  2. To serve, divide the muesli into individual bowls and top each serving with shredded apple or pear, nuts, and seeds.  Add additional toppings as desired.

Bon appétit! xo Jane
