Clear the Clutter!

Clear the clutter - get organizedDo you feel it in the air?  It’s nearly fall!  Crisp, clear, and full of possibilities!

After the long, lazy days of summer, I’m feeling a nudge.  A nudge to clear out the clutter.

Believe it or not, I actually want to get organized!  My mind is aflutter with ideas for corralling excess papers in the office, clothes in the closet, and hubbub in my head!

I’d better act while the feeling lasts, because once it’s gone, it’s gone!

First:  Jettison the Junk

How about a little organization inspiration?  The stylish office, above, is enough to get my inner neat freak in a frenzy!

I love the way the room starts with a base of simple, but practical shelves and cubicles.  Then the baskets are added in, both with and without lids.  So many baskets! Just think how much stuff you could store in that many baskets!

In addition, the white notebooks provide great organization for papers while blending into the cubicles.  Pure genius!

Of course, decorative elements weren’t ignored, from the great sconces above the cubicles, to the colorful floral arrangement, the bold patterned chair, the gorgeous desk, and the lovely lamp.  Something tells me this is the office of an interior designer.  (Well, the swatches were a bit of a tip-off!)

As proof of how effective all of these organizational elements are, look how clean the desk is!  A miracle!

My plan is to hit Target and TJ Maxx this weekend in search of baskets, baskets, and more baskets.  Oh, and something to put all of those baskets on!

Next:  Weed through my Wardrobe

Once my office is organized, it’s on to the closet!  I have to admit, I’m ready to make the transition from my light summer garb to cozy sweaters, blazers, scarves, and boots.

I tend to keep my wardrobe pretty lean (although Dave might argue with that claim).  In addition to the clothes hanging in my closet, I keep two large plastic bins to hold my out-of-season clothes.

I’ve found I’d rather buy new things instead of hanging on to old things in the off chance I might eventually need them.  (I don’t apply this rule to special occasion things like dresses, fancy shoes, and nice suits, though.)

As I make the switch from summer clothes to fall, I’ll also choose clothes for donation.  Anything that wasn’t worn all summer, and which I don’t think I’ll want to wear next summer, gets placed in a pile.  I then make a record of everything I’m donating and take a couple of photos for tax purposes.

Next, I place everything in large shopping bags with handles and throw them in the back of my car, ready for delivery.  I think dropping off the donations is my favorite part of my twice-yearly closet cleanout!

Finally:  Banish Brain Drain

Last, but definitely not least, is clearing out the mental cobwebs.

I’ve found that doing things like organizing the office, cleaning out closets, or even just tackling the junk drawer, can be amazingly uplifting for the spirit.

There’s definitely something about having too much stuff that causes me to feel mentally weary.

Getting rid of excess helps lighten the load on my brain, elevating my mood, giving me clarity, and allowing me to concentrate on the things that really matter.

As a bonus, getting rid of excess stuff makes my day run smoother.

Having fewer clothes in my closet makes getting dressed in the morning a breeze!  For one thing, I can actually see what I own.  Plus, my clothes don’t get as wrinkly when they’re not all smushed together.  Less ironing!  Another reason to feel happier!

Another way I rid myself of mental clutter is to notice my thoughts.  If I realize that I’m spending a lot of mental energy rehashing the same thoughts over and over again, I immediately try to change my thinking because I know this kind of obsessive behavior will wear me out!

Check out my posts on how to get more done by taking it easy, the art of breathing, and how to be happy now to find ways to deal with unproductive thinking.

Yes, fall is the perfect time for clearing the clutter, letting go of the old, and embracing the new.

Get ready for new opportunities, a new attitude, and a new you!

Ooo I’m so inspired by that office photo! I’m currently in the cleaning out the clutter mode too! I am spray painting some old shelving metallic gold to give it a much needed face lift then they’re going to be hung in the office to get that excess clutter organized and free up my desk space 🙂
